Le SUMXU, un ancêtre félin aux oreilles pliées
Quelques siècles avant l'arrivée de nos doux scottishs existait un félin aux drôles d'oreilles pliées appelés le Semxu... Voici quelques récits intéressants.
Généralement, les chats ont les oreilles droites et de forme triangulaire, de taille variant entre les petites oreilles comme chez le persan aux oreilles évasées chez les orientaux. Elles peuvent être très rapprochées ou laissées un front large comme chez le british.
Mais la génétique peut aussi intervenir et proposer quelques oreilles hors du commun.
Il existe une maladie génétique rare qui ajoute une seconde paire d’oreilles plus petites derrière les oreilles normales. Elles sont apparemment non fonctionnelles et parfois peuvent affecter le cerveau de ces minoux.
Outre cette maladie génétique, il existe deux formes d'oreille distinctes : les pliées comme les Scottishs folds et les courbées comme chez les American curls.
Le premier félin qui est apparu avec les oreilles pliées est le Sumxu qui est une race complètement éteinte qui vivait la région de Pékin, en Chine. La description du Sumxu est un chat à poils longs avec une robe noire ou jaune brillant et les oreilles pendantes. Un jésuite polonais en mission dans le sud de la Chine, Michael Boym (ca. 1612-1659), décrit le Sumxu dans son livre traitant sur la faune chinoise. "Sum Xu" vient de l’interprétation portugaise du mot « Songshu », qui signifie "rat de pins." Boym écrit que le Sumxu était un animal assez jaune et noir qui était couramment apprivoisé et portait un collier d'argent. C’étaient de bons chasseurs de souris et étaient vendus pour un maximum de 9 pièces d'argent par rapport à leur utilité et leur rareté.
